Move aside floating living room shelves, my husband’s office shelving just won the title of my favorite build ever! I completed modern industrial shelving for my husband’s home office makeover for week 4 of the One Room Challenge. Click to check out the office’s mood board & design plan, the DIY drum chandelier I did last week, and here to see the other participant’s rooms.
I found a tutorial for an IKEA HYLLIS hack on Shine Your Light Blog that I absolutely fell in love with. Her helpful tips outlined everything I needed to know to make these, so just pop over there for the full tutorial.
I also am proud to say I scored the HYLLIS metal shelves when they went on sale at IKEA for only $10 a piece! Then of course, shopping for wood I went with pine, rough sawn on one side to make it cheaper. I couldn’t have made this without Rust-Oleum, my favorite spray paint brand, who graciously sent me a few cans of white and oil-rubbed bronze spray paint to use in this project.

Painting the mirror white with Rust-Oleum gloss white spray paint. I protected the mirror using newspaper and FrogTape.
Here is a breakdown of this project’s costs:
- 4 pine boards 1″ x 12″ in 8′ length = $40
- 2 IKEA HYLLIS steel shelving units = $20
- 2 cans Rust-Oleum Oil Rubbed Bronze spray paint = $0 (would usually cost $8, but Rust-Oleum sent me free product for this blog post – yay!)
- Jacobean stain = $0 (picked up free at the local household hazardous waste facility)

I could not be more pleased with how the modern industrial shelving turned out. They are just my style and give the office SO much functional storage!

Love the shelves!!!
Thank you!
So pretty! I love the look of metal and wood. I might just have to follow your lead and make one of my own, especially since it’s such a big impact for such a reasonable price point.
Happy last week of ORC!
Thanks Kat! And yes, it did make a BIG impact in the room. I love these shelves! Thanks for stopping by my blog 🙂

What a great way to repurpose shelves and get a high end look for pennies.
Thanks Donna!
Fantastic Hack. But I thought you couldn’t paint galvanized metal without it quickly peeling away. Did that Rustoleum spray paint actually workout for you in the longterm?
Yes, it’s only marred just slightly through the years! It’s adhered great, but the kind I used was the more expensive spray paint formulated to stick to metal.
