Dr. Seuss Table and Chairs Makeover – Cat in the Hat

Dr. Seuss Table and Chairs Makeover – Background

IMG_20140213_111346My husband and I are big Dr. Seuss fans. My husband loves reading his tongue twisters and I’ve always loved the iconic illustrations. My life-long dream was to illustrate a children’s book because I was inspired by Dr. Seuss. It came true when I was 18 (visit picklebumppress.com to check it out) and I’ve never stopped loving Dr. Seuss. Hopefully this bit of back story helps you understand why I try to foster love for the author in my children. I read them Dr. Seuss almost daily (from our collection of 29 of his books) and when it came time to design a bedroom for my daughter, I seized the opportunity to make Dr. Seuss come alive in our home.

Finding the Set

Which brings me to this table and chair set of kids furniture. I had been searchingIMG_20130904_105300  Craigslist to find a set for under $20 for six months or so when I came across these at a garage sale. I (secretly) jumped for joy when the woman sold them to me for only $6. I wanted Dr. Seuss furniture for our Dr. Seuss room.
I thought the characters from “Cat in the Hat” would go perfectly on this set with Thing 1 and Thing 2 on each of the two chairs. Here’s the result:

Painting the Dr. Seuss Table and Chairs Set

I used the good old prepare, prime, paint, protect method. I hand painted the characters, using black sharpie for the detailing and outlines. This set turned out better than I could have hoped, and it looks great in my kid’s Dr. Seuss room.

    1. It’s some paint I picked up at my local Household Hazard Waste facility. I didn’t purchase it so unfortunately I can’t remember the name or color of the paint. I just tried to match the light blue from the book as best I could.

Thank you for commenting and complimenting!!

  1. When my children were small I painted the main bathroom of the house in Dr. Seuss. I crammed just about every character around the walls. Big birds perched on the anchor points of towel rods. Funky trees everywhere. Yertles and their ilk liked to stay close to the bathtub. My children and all the neighborhood kids would sit in the bathtub watching me paint. It was lovely.
