DIY Garage Shelving With Reclaimed Wood

There’s a whole lot of unused storage space in my garage, what about you? For the last six years we lived in our house it has just been laying in wait. I finally got to it this summer and with the help of my dad, maximized the back wall of the garage. The DIY garage shelving we constructed has more than tripled my storage space!

Garage clutter solved with a unique approach to building in garage shelving storage

My dad had a lot of used hardwood lumber from a shed he recently tore down on his property. This reclaimed wood was full of nail holes, but we trimmed it up used a miter saw and table saw.

DIY Garage Shelving Design

The shelf design we landed on was constructed to easily be disassembled. Each shelf stacks on top of each other and the 2 x 4 supports are only connected to the shelf above it. We built a ladder on one end and screwed 2 x 4’s in to the wall studs against the wall on the other end.

Plans for simple and low-cost DIY garage shelving using reclaimed wood

Since our DIY garage shelving is constructed with real wood, they are very strong, despite imperfections in the lumber. This allowed for minimal framing structure. The shelves are 14′ long, two of which use full length lumber. The other two we added splices on the ends to span the whole width.

To hold the shelves together, we screwed cross pieces 2″ wide approximately every 3 feet. The cross pieces are where our 2 x 4 supports are screwed in to provide even more strength. The end of each shelf simply has two screws holding it down onto the ladder and wall 2 x 4’s, respectively.

Use reclaimed wood to build garage shelves. This unique design allows for the shelves to be disassembled easily but does not sacrifice on strength.

Although these reclaimed wood shelves might not look shiny and new, they do their job. Plus, taking the extra time to clean up nail holes and whatnot from this lumber meant my whole DIY garage shelving project cost me nothing but time.
