DIY Chandelier in Master Bedroom

Our home was flipped in 2011. It was purchased by a renovation company, they invested tens of thousands into fixing it up, and then put it on the market to make a profit. We bought it with the finishes the flipper preferred. This is why I often refer to things in my house as “builder grade,” because someone flipping a house is going to make design choices that appeal to the general audience the same way a builder would. Take our light fixtures for example:

boob lightBam. There it is. And this fixture isn’t just in the hall and over the kitchen sink like it should be. It is in every single room of our house. And it’s on sale at Menards every single week. And it’s not that bad–I know–but it is quite plain, you have to admit. The light fixture in a room is like the icing on a cake. It is a wonderful way to add taste. And it is easy to be forgotten and over looked if it doesn’t make a statement. Of all places in my house this light fixture should not be, I decided our master bedroom was most important.

Obviously it is upside down, but this is the way I planned for it to be attached to the existing light fixture as a chandelier. Yep! I made my own diy chandelier! See that metal circle in the middle of the shade? I hot glued a washer with a bolt sized opening to it. Then I ran it through the existing bolt that was used for the previous light fixture. This is how it would attach, now I just needed to make it pretty. I spray painted it black, then I used my handy dandy hot glue gun to attach silver Mardi Gras beads and crystals from an old candle tree my neighbor gave me.

This is the final result:

Isn’t that so much better? This diy chandelier only cost me $5 for the lamp shade, the rest I had on hand. I’m sure some of you might think the beads are chintzy, but if you didn’t know what they were, I bet something as cheap at Mardi Gras beads would not be your first guess.

For such a small amount of money and effort, this decor change had a huge impact. It made our master bedroom feel more luxurious and grande. Now when you walk in, you notice the light fixture as a central feature in the space, instead of noticing it looks exactly like the one in your house.

Here are some images at night with the light on. I love how it shines a spotlight on the bed and just glows around the rest of the room from the two inch opening at top.
