DIY Board Book

My last craft post I shared how to transfer a photo onto wood using mod podge. The technique resulted in full color, beautiful images I was really proud of.

This craft got me thinking about other applications for this technique. And since we had another special event to make a present for recently, I set out to create my own board book.
I had two copies of this 6″ by 6″ board book, “Sleep.”

It wasn’t very thick, so I wasn’t sure how it would take the layers of mod podge, but I gave it a whirl anyway.
I coated all sides of the book in black acrylic craft paint.

Then I created a Word document with 6″ by 6″ images of the two cutest little girl friends ever (spoiler – it’s my daughter, Lily, and her friend, Emirsyn).    My mother-in-law was kind enough to print the images for me with a fancy laser printer so they were vibrant and heavy duty. I covered the black book with mod podge, laid down the printed image, smoothed it down, and then covered the top in mod podge again. Visit this post for a more comprehensive tutorial.

This book was a present for Emirsyn’s 4th birthday. It is entitled, “What I Love About Emirsyn” by Lily Woods. Lily helped me with many aspects of making this book, including painting it black, applying mod podge, and trimming the photos. She came up with all the phrases printed in the book when I asked her to tell me what she likes about being friends with Emirsyn.

DIY board book tutorial. Great gift idea!

This diy board book was fun to make and so special to give. If you’re looking for something thoughtful and heartfelt to give as a gift, consider this DIY project! I also think this idea would be a great addition to your bookshelves for your young child to learn family names or relatives they don’t see often. Making your own board book is an idea that has endless possibilities!

    1. I used a board book we already had and painted over it with black acrylic craft paint. When it was dry, I began the process of mod-podging on photos.

      Hope that helped Linda!

  1. I love this idea. We have a new baby (7 mos.) in the family and I thought this would be a great gift. I am thinking maybe too young for this now because babies put everything in their mouth. I’ll wait until she’s a little older. Did you use regular computer paper for the pictures? How did you place words over photos?
