Design Your Own T-Shirt With Bleach

dye design a t-shirt with bleachIf you’ve been reading my blog, you probably already know that each week my friend Lexi and I get together to do a craft. We are obsessed with Pinterest because of all the inspiring ideas. This idea was simple and exciting to try. We filled old spray bottles with bleach to design our own t-shirts! This project required only three materials: spray bottle, bleach, and lots of cardboard or card stock. We used the card stock to cut out our images and to put inside the shirt to prevent the bleach bleeding through. The bleach turned the shirt different colors depending on the material/color of the cloth.

I ran mine though the cold cycle by itself and it came out looking the same as when it went in, but I did it to be safe. I would hate to bleach my other clothes by accident!

Another tip if you’re going to try this project: spray just a few splashes at a time. Let the bleach soak in for a few minutes before you decide if you want to add more. Often you spray more than you realize at first.

  1. I want to try this technique. Do you just place the cardboard cut-out inside? No tape or glue? How long on the bleach (approximately.) Also, the instructions say to put the cardboard on the inside…is that correct? Thanks…really fab

    1. Hi Donna, thanks for the comment. I just stuck a piece of cardboard inside the shirt to stop the bleach from leaking through. Then I put the cardboard cutout of the bird on top of the shirt (outside) and sprayed bleach around it. I did not tape the bird down, but you certainly could. The bleach took about an hour to dry. Be careful not to spray too much in the beginning, it changes color gradually so you don’t really know how it looks until after an hour.

      Good luck to you!

  2. You can speed up the bleaching proces by using a hair blower, to dry the fabric… after that rinse with water to stop the bleaching process!
