DIY Wedding Gift Sign
This weekend was such a special weekend! My friend Sara got married (finally!) to her guy of the last 11 years! I had the honor of being a bridesmaid, and my little Lillian was the flower girl. If you follow me on Instagram or Facebook, perhaps you saw some of the photos from this weekend already. For Sara’s special day, there were a lot of festivities planned leading up to it. Their shower was a few weeks ago and I was excited to make a sentimental gift for them. I wanted to create a diy wedding gift sign out of some old wood to highlight what is most unique about their relationship: the length of time they’ve stood by each others side and how they’ve grown up together.
I got started by painting my piece of wood ivory (that was easy enough). Then I started to freehand my numbers with pencil first, the same method I used for this wooden sign outlining our family values. One clever trick I used to center the writing was to fold printer paper evenly, then cut it and lay it down flush with the edge of the sign. This ensured I had even spacing on each side of the numbers and in between them without having to measure (see above pic)!
Next I simply filled in my numbers with a black paint pen. I would suggest using paint pens for writing on wood signs because they allow for more control and precision than a paint brush does.
Next I filled in my other text with the accent color, teal. Oh how I love teal. I wrote cute phrases that could help you guess what the date was for. For instance,”I do, Me too!” are the phrases for their wedding day. I also filled in little hearts between the dates to up the adorable factor.
Lastly, I decided to distress. The piece of wood I used had many nail holes and grooves so I felt distressing fit with that style. I used the same method as this DIY housewarming sign, sanding the edges and various spots, then coating it in a thin layer of stain. This distressing got a little darker than last time, make sure if you try this to wipe your stain off right away. Here’s the final result:
This details their first date (in 2004!), the date they got engaged, and the day they were married (just this last Friday). Then I wrote their new last name (which is not the same as either of their original last names – long story) with their first names scrolled across it.
A few close ups of the cool distressing effect.
I absolutely love how my DIY wedding gift sign turned out. When Sara and Jake buy their first house, it will be so fun to see where they choose to hang this on their wall. Giving wooden sign decor pieces has been my MO lately because everyone has been loving them. They are also a fun, inexpensive, and thoughtful gift for the people you care about.
